HLDS - Linux Unstable FPS
#1
Hy everyone,i am hosting my HLDS server (maxplayers 24) on Ubuntu Desktop 9.10 x64 on this system:
-AMD Athlon x64 Dual Core - 2.31 Ghz
-1 Gb DDRAM2 667 Hz
-HDD 80 Gb SATA2

It's easy for me to get 1000 FPS but stabilizing them it's very hard for me.I tried almost every tutorial found on the internet :

-http://www.howto-cs16-root.de/gen_kernel.htm
-editing param.h with 1000 and 1500 hz

I also tried different kernel's : 2.6.24,2.6.28,2.6.27,2.6.31,2.6.32 ...
Also tried patching those kernels with RT Patch and ZEN Patch...

So far,best results come from 2.6.31.6-rt19 :

I know it's pretty good with 10-15 players, but when server is full i have FPS drops from 1000 to 500 Sad
I tried disableing Cool&Quiet and ACPI from BIOS but then it showed only one core and the FPS,even with -pingboost 3 +sys_ticrate 10000 were at maximum 888 fluctuating a lot...
For 3 months now i'm compileing kernels trying to get minimum 950 and maximum 1000 FPS with FULL server (26/26).
Please help me in finding a solution for my server Smile

PS:Sorry for my english

You wrote Ubuntu Destop. Does that mean you are running a xserver? if yes shut it down an or switch to a console only runlevel. Than try again.

It doesn't matter what distro i use....the result is the same ! Anyway,i always press CTRL+ALT+F1 to disable graphic interface and then i run my HLDS server.I don't think this is important for stable FPS.
There was a ZEN Patch to kernel 2.6.24,it had very interesting options in compileing the kernel from 100 to 10 000 Hz.I tried that but it gives me BusyBox (dropping to a shell) when trying to boot Sad ... maybe because the kernel is too old for Ubuntu 9.10 ...
I'm running out of options,i have a good system for running a simple 24 slot hlds server, but stabilizing those FPS is something very hard to achieve...I use that linux booster posted here,it gives me 99.9 % CPU when running the server.I also tried resched.sh and idler witho NO effect at all !

This is the 2.6.24-zen4 kernel that i think it has many interesting options :

I did not say teh distro is causing it, i said normally it includes and starts the xserver with it. A Xserver normally causes fps drops. So just change the runlevel to 2 or 3 and try again... I bet your system is on 5.

I'm sort of new in linux ( base commands + kernel compile ) , i don't know how to do that.Could you explain it step-by-step ?

Take a look at this:

The second hit gives you the answer.
