Updating multiple installations, nemrun?
#1
Hi,

I'm hosting two TF2 servers out of my box in UK. The updating-process is a bit of weird tho. Because sometimes i'm out and VALVE push out an update and the servers stay "offline". Is there anyway to create a auto-updater which shuts down the servers and update them and then reboots them whenever an update is pushed? I read about something called "nemrun" and "srcdsupdater" or something similiar. How do i use them?

The placements for the installations are:
/srcds_tf2
/srcds_tf2_1

Thanks.

To be honest I don't know any thing about any of these solutions.

My personal solution is just to shutdown the servers every night and run the updater, with a schedule task.
That also gives me time to update svn's and such (Use it for garrysmod servers).

So a cronjob would do it?

Well yes.
But if you are unlucky you will end up waiting 23.59 hours before your server updates.

But then again very few server admins update fast, and often the updates come out late.

You can have two minute cronjobs ... just saying...

Well you need to restart the server before the update takes affect.

So what would be the best options then?

Combination of cron job and watching the Valve mailing list.

Sigh.. I was hoping for some automatic solution where i didn't have to interfere with it.

I recommend everyone DO NOT TAKE THIS PLUGIN!!!!

people can spoof master server update packets easily, that means they can shutdown your server everytime they want

Well it should be able to filter out AC2 packets from everyone else than the steam masterservers by using iptables

Still even doing that just the whole concept is kinda funny in my mind. Big Grin

A man do what he's got to do. I'm going on vacation so i want the servers to auto-update. I'll see what i can do by using nemrun from now.

Still, relying on a plugin is a NOT RECOMMENDED solution for me. I would start the srcds-processes with their own PID's, check for updates each day at, for example, 03:00. The process would be: shutdown server, update, start server with the same PID again.

Problem solved.
