Are the server FPS actually important?
#1
I've opened quite a lot of such topics, regarding my server FPS values. Now that I've finally got them to being stable and changing it to 1000FPS, I started to notice that people are saying that there is actually NO difference between 333, 500 or even 1000FPS servers? An article that I found the most convincing was the following:

http://www.moreal.org/articles/fpsund.php

Now, I'm becoming really worried that all this is actually just a marketing gag. LineMax, Ckras, Crowfire all offering us 1000FPS boosted war servers for 50+ Euros? Is there someone that can proove me that the article above is wrong and the server FPS really matters? Thanks!

333FPS would have lag problems when 10players on inferno.

500FPS would have smaller lags Smile

1000FPS nothing at all, might be a little though.

The best is to test it yourself Smile And feel the different! Smile

I've heard loads of such talks, but I want to hear a reason! And something regarding that article.

More calculations per second, how better server. (to a limit.)

Yep, but check my link. What you say is true, but there is quite a good explanation that could be turning this down (check the IN THEORY section).

I think it's abit hard to proof it.

I feel 1.000FPS server much better than 500FPS servers.

Yeah, it's hard for everyone to explain it... even a guy from LineMax support:
Quote:<@LM|ALEX> hi
<+sk4Te> Hi, I'd like to ask if your VTR-X CS:S servers are 1000FPS boosted?
<@LM|ALEX> yes
<+aXoTi> Ok, now for the 2nd thing, I would like to know why 1000FPS boosted servers have advantage amongst let's say 333 FPS servers?
<+sk4Te> I mean, what actually improved
<+sk4Te> improves*
<+sk4Te> And is this one of the main things why they are more expensive than normal servers
<@LM|ALEX> 1000fps server needs more performance of the machines
<@LM|ALEX> so its more expensive
<+sk4Te> That's true, but why will it help me
<@LM|ALEX> the feeling of the gameis different when you play with 333 in compare to 1000
<@LM|ALEX> how can i say in english^^ (je*em ti angleško podporo)
<+sk4Te> You said it right but
<+sk4Te> The server may calculate its ?world? at 1000 FPS. That is only a millisecond for every calculated frame. On the other end the clients do not get their updates at such a high rate but a lot slower. How often they can be updated per second is determined by the server?s tickrate. The tickrate is usually set to 66 or 100 for high quality servers.
<+sk4Te> Now, if a server is 100TickRate, isn't it true that the main thing is that the FPS don't drop below 100?
<@LM|ALEX> ?
<@LM|ALEX> what do you want now?
<@LM|ALEX> do you have a problem with a server that we host?
<+sk4Te> As the clients would be getting the same gameplay at 333 and 1000FPS servers?
<@LM|ALEX> or do you want to buy one?
<+sk4Te> I want to buy one
<@LM|ALEX> we have testservers
<@LM|ALEX> you can test vtre and vtrx for

He kind of got nervous ... it could be that he doesn't know what the heck I was talking about, or I just caught him and couldn't think of a comeback for their marketing gag.

I'd love to hear an answer from BehaartesEtwas here, as he discovered the FPS Meter, and seems a real pro at this^^.

It depends on the person and players.
I personally don't notice much, other can't play on a server with under 1000 FPS...

I read an article on steam forums by an admin who said 1000FPS servers don't matter, I hate it when fags think they are actually better...

Really, if the server is 100 tick 100% all the time, and the users rates are excellent and lag free, it will make a small difference... But not really,

It's a rip off, don't buy it, your just wasting your money, they rip you off.

I don't really care about those prices, I have a dedicated server and I want to make sure about this stuff.

There is a difference if you are competitive, but if you play for fun you won't really notice a difference. But of course the more the better, it requires more resources, but it's definatly noticeable difference.

I recommend this stuff for 100% Cal / Cevo Training private servers, otherwise you're wasting your money.

Sad
I have been having headache with the server FPS too...

I am hosting a TF2 server, and I have my fps_max set to 600. Whenever the server has 25+ players, the server FPS drops dramatically, and kind of piss off my players and they leave.

(See the graph below, which is from HLstatsX. Blue is the # of players. Orange is the server FPS)

Like in the above graph, you can see at the end, when there was ~29 players, the server FPS dropped to 61... I was in the game at that time, and actually it felt OK...

Currently I am having performance issue with my server, and I have most of the SourceMod plugins disabled. Trying to see whether the plugins have anything to do with the lagging.

I tried to set the fps_max lower, to 300, but same thing, that when less than ~20 to 25 players, the server FPS was fine, but once over ~25, the server FPS drops greatly.

Any ideas on this?
