split hl1 and hl2 engine
#1
Hello,

what do you think about splitting hl1 (incl.cs e.g.) and hl2 (incl.hl2 e.g.) on a server? should i do that? every engine for one root?
i tried a lot of kernels, but no kernel gave me the power to get a stable (fps) hl1 and hl2 server. normally the hl2 servers are ok, but the hl1 server shows a lot of drops down to 200fps (no rt patch). normally if i use the rt patch the fps drops are less (hl1), but the hl2 drops increase :-(
now i have the idea that both game interupt each other?

best reguards

I always recommend not running srcds and hlds on the same machine...

I don't know. I had always big problems with it. It probably has something to do how srcds and hlds are using the cpu.

Perhaps the libraries they use also?? Idk I never had a problem when I had a single hl1 server amongst all my hl2 servers.

i think problems are more when you use 50% of each.

If you *really* want to do this, I'd suggest using separate VM's for HLDS & SRCDS. That way you can tweak the Linux installations for each without impacting the other.

I had problems already with one single hlds and (I think) 3 srcds on the same machine.

I would not recommend running gameservers in VMs, unless you really know what you are doing and how to install the VMs properly. It is not impossible to run realtime tasks inside VMs, but it requires special configuration, as this is not what you usually do with a VM. And of course you bring 2 more components into the game, the Dom0 (speaking in XEN terms) with its kernel and the VM software (e.g. XEN itself). Instead of tuning one kernel you have to tune 2 kernels and a lot of VM settings ;-) Ive though about this, but I did not tried...

I have been playing with Xen alot lately myself specially with the large improvements they made in virtualization (I went to a seminar on it :-) But with alot of the newer things being implemented specially on the corporate version, But again it requires alot of knowledge to use it :/
