Valve and Linux

Why is it that recently after EVERY steam update linux servers either do not get the update or get an update that does not work properly?

Is valve trying to kills DODS on linux?

Is valve trying to kill DODS?

I wish that developer(s) at valve would take the time to ensure that all updates are fully tested and that they are available for both platforms before they are released.

currently - my linux dods server crashes after EVERY map change

At least yours actually works. The Team Fortress 2 server update from 3 days ago has put mine and a lot of others out of service and there's still no fix. And before this, every few map changes or so the server would just crash and restart for me too. There's also a bad left 4 dead update out too, but I'm not sure of all the details.

I don't think they're trying to kill specific game servers, I think this just goes back to the classic problem that Linux and gaming just never go together. I know it's pathetic that they can't make a working server, but they obviously just don't make the effort. Their primary objective is always Windows, and frankly, it seems even the server realm Windows is "supreme" for these games too. Example: The server list for TF2 has definitely decreased but only by around 30% - meaning windows is still the majority.

They are just not even testing updates/working with these servers at all or they would see these issues people are having. Laziness, lack of interest, whatever it is...

You got to remember though, there are a lot of different ditros of linux, and people in with those distros are using different kernel versions, libraries, and what not. It's impossible to test everything. Someone said the problems with the update only effect 25% of linux users. Might have been Robin Walker at Valve, not sure who said it.

There is a solution

they can pick 2 or 3 popular linux distros that they support say redhat, fedora, etc...
then issue WORKING updates for these distros
game server folks will then have 3 distros to choose from that get continuous updates.

the advantages will be immediate both for valve and for the community
faster and cheaper code
less time testing, etc...

i'm really stuck - i run a clan server and our clan has already paid for 1 full year of linux hosting
our host provider does a great job and they have a great backbone - valve is THE issue.
additionally my team is in the finals in CAL competition and here we are stuck without a server

and from where i'm sitting the folks in my group are pretty frustrated - and i imagine others are too

try running without autoupdate. most updates, at least for css, arent mandatory.

my dods server is running fine. i dont use autoupdate but have a cronjob shutting down all servers, performing the updates (with verifyall) and start the servers again. i did not had any problems with this so far...
now my l4d server got mad (100% cpu load but empty and not running), but i have to investigate... it happend before the update script updated anything.

Exactly.

It isn't as complicated as it would seem even though there's lots of different versions all over. I would definitely say the top OSes for Linux right now are RedHat stuff/CentOS, Ubuntu, and probably SuSE in last place. It should not be difficult for them to test this stuff on just stock installs of the latest versions of those. I personally have never had to mess with the kernel. Really never had to touch any of the libs. For the person that does that, obviously they'd be on their own if there were issues... but testing with stock installs on a few top OSes isn't much to ask at all. At least in my case, I'm running all stock stuff, in fact this server is brand new as of a month ago. Haven't touched a thing and it still doesn't work.

It's a real shame for people who actually pay for Linux servers for this purpose... I didn't pay for one to host TF2, it's just something I decided to start doing alongside another project on that system. And it's mostly a server for friends to come on and just play whenever. So I can just wait, even though it annoys me too. But others are really screwed here... all we can do is hope that Valve issues a fix for us soon. -_-

i forget to mention: i am using gentoo linux, so i am very sure that valve had really no chance to test anything on a comparable system ;-) (gentoo does not know release version like debian but is permanently updated - I am doing weekly updates of the server)

i don't really think those kind of problems are related to linux or distributions. the vast majority of (at lease css) servers is running on linux, and i don't think they all have those problems. maybe you can give a little more details on what is going wrong? maybe the problem can be fixed easily by changing some settings...

since the last two TF2 updates at least, (the one tonight and 5 days ago) i have had users complaining about the server acting "choppy" almost like clientside fps dropping, and also issues with 1-3 second world freezes. Am i alone here or is this more widespread? Nothing on my end has changed outside of valve updates Sad

Yup. Same problem here. 1-3 second cut-outs, people complaining about increased ping times. Nothing has changed on my end either, other than the Valve updates.
