L4D Versus Mode

I'm able to get versus mode working on my server, however...no more than 4 people can join the server. It reads 8 slots when I type "status" and it's showing as 8 slots in the server browser. When 4 people have joined and the 5th wants to join, the server says that it is full. Anyone else having this issue? Any remedy?

I had that problem when it was in normal mode for a bit, then I changed it to versus on the fly. I put "director_no_human_zombies 0" in the server.cfg, restarted the server, then 8 people joined immediately.

I'm still not really sure how its supposed to work, I only found the director_no_human_zombies command in the infected.cfg file in the cfg folder, I don't know all the quirks with it..

Another thing I discovered today, look in the maps folder, a lot of maps have _vs_ in the name, I wonder if we're supposed to use those versions when in versus mode??
Some frigging info from Valve would sure be nice, but we have to fend for ourselves as usual.

edit: This is my latest theory.. The right way to do versus is, you're supposed to change the map to the ones with _vs_ in the name, such as l4d_vs_hospital01_apartment and it automatically puts it in versus mode, no need to even bother doing director_no_human_zombies, in fact we're probably not supposed to even mess with that cvar.

Thanks, I'll see how that works.

I really wish Valve would help us server admins out and release some sort of documentation with each multiplayer game they release.

I've done this and the server starts with 8 slots. After a while though it drops to a 4 player server. Is this through player voting or maybe the mapcycle?

found out you have to have director_no_human_zombies 0 in server.cfg

Hi, new to this forum, it's been a massive help so far Smile Thanks.

Is there any way to force a dedicated server to be Versus mode only? I've set my server to 8 players vs maps, but it appears that if a group of people from matchmaking choose a co-op match and get allocated to my server it changes back to co-op mode.

I noticed this aswell, when I set the server to a steam group and enabled the option to prevent people outside the steam group joining the server while empty it never switched from versus mode. However as soon as I removed that option from the cfg file the server kept being set back to coop which I also assumed it was from the match making.

The only thing I can thing to do is remove the co-op maps from the server, I haven't tried this yet but can't see it not working. If it does, it's not an ideal solution as I have to copy the map files back in order to play co-op.

what do u put in the steamgroup field btw? is it a number or the name of your steamgroup? Also..any kind soul tell me the commands u can use with steamgroup enabled?

I put the steamgroup number, obtained from the group admin page in steamcommunity.com (sv_steamgroup 1234).

There's also sv_steamgroup_exclusive, 0 (default) = anyone can join, 1 = reserved for group members, but as soon as a group member joins it opens up to the public, 2 = only group members can join.

I was digging around in the cfg directory and i found two interesting .cfg files. twoplayers.cfg and infected_off.cfg

twoplayers.cfg :
