Advice on OS needed

Hi folks,
iam planning to get me a new dedicated server and iam now havin problems to decide wich system it should be. Mainly iam using this server for valve gamehosting and some websitestuff.

Currently iam running a SUSE 10.1 system what actually runs very well, but the l4d wont startup, bcause of an floating exception error where noone can help me with, and i dont know what else to do than just getting a new machine up and running

So i can decide between the folloing OS's:
- Ubuntu 6.06 LTS
- Debian 4.0
- SUSE 10.3

So what i need is a recommendation on what os the srcds server runs "good" with l4d.

Why dont you use the new ubuntu 8.10, thats what i use for my l4d server and its great

Bcause iam not that good at linux installing/adminstrating and stuff and my hoster offers preinstalled systems that i can install by pressing a button

Thats how i got my 10.1 and it ran good untill l4d...
so i hope a newer/other linux will help me out.

And hes offering the linux dis i mentioned above.

The main question at this point is what OS's come bundled with glibc version higher than 2.4. Suse 10 does not, as I get the error you received as well.

Ordered SUSE 10.3, it will come with this (glibc):
glib2-2.14.1-4.2
glib2-lang-2.14.1-4
glibc-2.6.1-18.3
glibc-locale-2.6.1-18.3

So this should work doesnt it?

The other question is.. why the hell noone other than another "junior-member" (dont get me wrong pls) got a competent answer to this problem.. i mean, this is the official forum for srcds isnt it?

The creators need to publicate that it is nescessery to have an glibc higher than 2.4 to run l4d...

you can Upgade any of the C Librarys within linux you dont really need to go for an OS with them already built in.

Sorry its a bit late replying but only popped on to check something else out.

And in addition to this with the likes of centos using yum its as easy as

yum install glibc glibc-common

should do the trick.

Thanks alot for the tip, the problem is now solved, the l4d server runs perfectly.. i just had to update my glibc to 2.5 and everything is fine now.. no new server needed!

no, its not the official srcds forum; the official would be @ valve



And i for myself, i would use debian because of "aptitude"/"apt" - i like it ^^

I want to try this but I'm currently running other Source servers (mainly DOD:S) on this server as well as things like Ventrilo, TeamSpeak, HLStats, etc. I'm afraid of breaking stuff. Can anyone confirm that this will not break other Source servers?

I wouldn't update glibc ever unless it was part of whole system upgrade. Thus, I would never write "yum install glibc" or "apt-get install glibc". There are separate commands for whole system upgrades. In Debian it's "apt-get install dist-upgrade". These commands make sure that the million packages that have dependencies to glibc will be upgraded wisely even though there might be conflict during normal upgrade.

Overall I would never upgrade system unless I was prepared to re-install it completely. It's that reliable. Usually people don't have anything important on their servers, so it's pretty much the same whether the upgrade succeeds - there's always plan B of reinstalling.

So, if you have anything important on your system, don't upgrade. If you just got your box and have configured maybe server.cfg and installed Mani, then go ahead and do the upgrade.
