Installing DS without having to update so much.

Can I install SourceDS without updating all the files, such as extracting them from the GCF's on my Windows box where I have CS:S installed, and then update, or even force the tool to download from a specific Update server? I live in Iceland and the telephone company I'm at, Iceland Telecom makes me charge for downloading internationally. Luckly, Iceland plays alot of CS/CS:S and we have five Content servers (thats 5 out of 33 servers for a contry with the popluation of 200.000 Smile ).

I'm running a Linux server and want to have a CS:S game server. Dont see any reason for system specs because of the nature of my problem.

Well, thank you for your time. Really enjoy all help since those gb's wouldn't make my telephone bill seem nice.

if the GCFs contain the files in the same directory stucture, i don't see why not. But I would think that the steam bin would download from the faster server or sort by locale? if not, yeah.. that should work.

Steam's pretty random about connecting to the right server. When Iceland Telecom and Vodanfone asked how to connect to the server, they said restart steam, because steam is still under construction.

Also, can you tell me about a few of the directories in your server folder on linux? Just so I can compare it to the GCF's.

Lots o' hugs and kisses :*

this is how my srcds.com looks

in the root directory which is ~/srcds:
Quote:-bash-3.00$ ls
InstallRecord.blob hl2 srcds_i686.core
bin srcds_amd srcds_run
cstrike srcds_i486 steam.core
debug.log srcds_i686

bin:
Quote:-bash-3.00$ ls bin/
dedicated_amd.so soundemitter_i486.so
dedicated_i486.so steamclient_i486.so
dedicated_i686.so studiorender_i486.so
engine_amd.so tier0_i486.so
engine_i486.so tier0_s_i486.so
engine_i686.so unitlib_i486.so
libsteamvalidateuseridtickets_i486.so vphysics_i486.so
materialsystem_i486.so vstdlib_i486.so
shaderapiempty_i486.so vstdlib_s_i486.so

cstrike:
Quote:-bash-3.00$ ls cstrike
DownloadLists logs resource
bin mapcycle.txt scene.cache
botchatter.db maplist.txt scripts
botprofile.db maps sound
cfg materials srcds.pid
credits.txt models stats.txt
dxsupport_override.cfg modelsounds.cache steam.inf
gameinfo.txt motd.txt

hl2:
Quote:-bash-3.00$ ls hl2
materials navplace.db scripts
models resource sound

is the basic gist of it, would take too long to ls all directories. If you downloaded that GCF of a linux server from an iceland server to to run a source dedicated server, i think you should be alright then.

I opened Source Dedicated Server.gcf and Counter-Strike Source Shared.gcf, extracted them, zipped them and put them in my web directory, and downloaded with firefox on my linux box.
I'm new to this, and just as I started, I found out about a thing called samba, which looks like would have saved me alot of time.

I am running Apache on win32 and thats the method I used. Anyways, it worked. Maybe I should have extracted HL2 as well since afterwards, it started downloading HL2 files, but I cancelled, although the server did work without it.
