Choosing right version linux kernel..
#1
Ok listen up.. I think this is more a question for Cryotek, but If anyone else knows sumthing spitt it out Wink

My gameserver host seems to be new to this gameserver thing.. but not to linux.. I've seen some stories on the Source DS steam forums about servers having LAG because they had an old kernel.. they had 2.4.xxx versions.. as they upgraded to newer kernels 2.6.xxx the LAG issues were solved.. anyone know if this could be true..

Because these people wrote that they had a very fast network..
same here with my host.. the server is located like 15 miles from me.. and the ping/latency is always beneath 40.. even when its full..
My host told me that my server isnt even using 50% of its cpu power!!

Could anybody confirm that they had LAG issue's using the old kernel..??

the game hosts specs are..:
AMD XP3000+
1024 MB DDR RAM
2 x 80GB HDD S-ATA
OS: Debian GNU/Sarge

Linux 2.4.27-1-386 #1 Fri Sep 3 06:24:46 UTC 2004 i686 GNU/Linux

I also noticed sumthing correct me if I'm wrong.. When I tried starting up srcds_run on the server.. (hole story behind that one dont ask) it said;
'Auto detecting CPU
Using AMD Optimised binary.
Source Engine binary './srcds_amd' not found, exiting
za mrt 19 04:24:15 CET 2005: Server Failed'

but the uname -m command showed "i686".. and according to the specs its an AMD XP3000+ cpu.. could this mean that my host installed Linux the wrong way ??

Could someone give me some advise.. because I want to help the host in getting the best out of his systems.. thnx

It's Debian GNU/Linux - Sarge Wink.

I'm running the same distro, with exactly the same kernel (only the setup is older - a 1.4Ghz TBird with 384MB SD-RAM) and I don't experience any lag whatsoever (the server is always occupied by 6 'players' in total, when I'm playing on it alone there will be 5 bots activated, etc.).
May the Source be with you...

yeah I think that its because of the older setup and the fact that you are only running a 6slots server with bots Wink.. this guy has like 3 or 4 18slot servers running on this machine (but I think even more) .. so there is a big difference in the cpu and memory usage..
This question was more for people running a dedicated server with at least 3 or more 16slots servers..

Cryotek would certainly know something about this.. because hes also recommending using kernel 2.6.xxx but I want to know if he heard about the older kernels causing since the last steam update or experienced it for him self..

an exemple from the steamuser forums:

XP is not a 64Bit CPU,
I am running 2.4.21-20.EL64Bit-SMP (Dual Opterons) on Redhat ES3 and they servers run smooth as, there is a bit more tweeking to be done for older kernels but its nothing to be scared of. Smile
the servers each run 16 cs/css/dod servers and dont seem to budge Smile

CPU sits on around 2.5 (75%)(above 3.2 is bad) Smile

16 css servers LAG FREE when all full on one 64bit dual opteron machine .. wow.. hmm if thats the case.. the GameServer industry sounds like a pretty profitable industry if you have the right people working for you that is and have alot of linux experience, unlike me LOLWink

How many slots is each server..?? Because I'm looking for a new business to invest in and this sounds pretty awesome..

And what are your exact server specs??

Btw thnx for the info Wink

The guy has 3 or 4 servers running with each 18 slots, not 16 servers Wink.
