I was wondering how many 16 slot servers I could run on a
dual quad-core (8 cores) 2ghz
4gb ram
linux os
bandwidth isn't an issue
I'll probably be running a mix of cs source and hl2dm servers

lol. Well you probably would lag a bit here and there but a 2.00 Ghz proccessor can run 40 100 tickrate slots. You have 8 of them. So 8X40 is 320/16=20. Course I wouldnt run that many because when the proccessor gets to about 80% wierd crap happens so i would only go for 12.

Sure just remember these are estimates only. So it could be less or it could be more.

i'd guess you'd be able to run at least a dozen but i've never ran quite that many on a single box myself. most was 8 on a quad core which we noticed extended it above capacity so reduced to 7...all the servers are 24-32 slot though.

Cores do not matter......its the speed at which they operate.

somone just told me I would need way more ram for even 10, 16 player servers but I'll just have to test that out I guess "if" I get them all full... but I think linux servers use less ram anyways

Well I would just test it. 2-3 gigs should be plenty considering 1 gig held 100 slots.

the SRCDS instances on the windows server i run take about 100-200MB each (DODS and TF2)...i think the only one using 200MB needs a restart though.
4GB ram is plenty i'd say.

Ya i aggree Ive found srcds to be not very RAM hungrey, but it sures loves to rape CPU. The amount of ram you have should be goods.

4 GB is way too much. At max put in 3 gbs.
