Anyone try installing on Solaris 10?
#1
Greetings,

I have a Solaris 10 (Intel) machine that I'd like to set up as a Source Dedicated Server.

Solaris 10 can run Intel linux binaries, but I haven't seen anyone mention in these forums whether or not they've been successful in running the Source Dedicated Server under Solaris.  There was one thread that discussed an unsuccessful attempt on SPARC CPUs.

Has anyone gotten the server to run under Intel-Solaris?  If not, I'll have to reformat my box for FreeBSD or Linux.  If no one has, I'll try it first and report back here.

Thanks,

UPDATE:

It looks like under the current (4/5/2007) Sun-distributed version of Solaris 10, the Solaris Containers for Linux Applications feature IS NOT included yet.  The only Linux solution for this release is the lxrun package, which only allows read access to the Linux filesystem--that won't work.

Solaris Containers for Linux Applications was moved from the Open Solaris Community to the official Sun code tree in December '06.  It appears to be available now in two distros.  The official-from-Sun package is a beta download of Solaris 10 from Sun,  called BrandZ (Solaris Containers for Linux Applications) DVD 35.

It looks like you can also download it separately from the Open Solaris Community BrandZ, but you can only install it on the Open Solaris Community Edition.

I know this sounds like more work than just installing Unbuntu or WinXP, but I'm a Solaris-head, and I like the networking, fault protection and virtualization features of Solaris.

I'd still like to see if anyone has gotten srcds to work under Solaris under any of the above (lxrun, BrandZ, Solaris Containers) before I give it a try.

Thanks Again.

Well, I d/l'd the install DVD from Sun, and will install it tonight with a goal of having SRCDS running this weekend. I'll report my progress here.

I'm interested with the outcome of this project. I will check later for updates. Good luck!

Well, don't hold your breath.  I'm having lots of trouble.  Not with srcsds yet, though.

First, Solaris doesn't support the ethernet chip in the PC I installed it on, and it's one of the few that have absolutely no drivers for it.  Not a big problem, since ethernet cards are nine bucks each, but it forced a total reinstall.

Then, the DVD on Sun's website, BrandZ (Solaris Containers for Linux Applications) DVD 35, is woefully out-of-date.  I have no idea why there's still a link to it, but it didn't have the SUNWlx brand I needed.  The OpenSolaris.org BrandZ tutorial says to grab the latest build, which is now DVD 61.  Sun.com really needs to do a better job keeping its marketing material in sync with OpenSolaris.org.  That was about 12 wasted hours between the ethernet card and the out-of-date release.

Now, I'm installing Solaris Community Edition v61.  If BrandZ doesn't work on this one I'll either resort to Xen on Solaris or just wipe the machine and start over with Ubuntu.

UPDATE:

I got Centos running under Solaris 10 in an "lx Brand." It works just fine.

I was able to download and completely build srcds without any errors. I am able to launch and run the server also with no errors.

However, I can't seem to see my server from my PC running Steam. I have the external IP address of the srcds server and the port it's running on, but can't connect to it. There is no firewall running on the Solaris box or the linux zone inside it. I can't figure it out.

At any rate, I'm much further along than I thought I'd be. This may actually work! I just gotta figure out why the Solaris box can see the outside world, the linux zone running inside it can see the outside world, but nobody seems to be able to see the source server running inside it.

When I get it working I'll post a full report. I'm much happier than when I posted my update on 4/16 :-)

UPDATE TWO: It works. I am running srcds under Solaris 10. Woot!

I have to get it all configured correctly. At the moment I don't have admin priv on my own server, and it looks like if you change the map by typing "map <whatever>" in the console, you get tossed into an alternate universe with your own map and new bots while everybody else keeps playing in the map you were just in. Don't quite get that.

When I get everything configured, I'll post the IP of the server and you can try it out. I'll also put together a full tutorial and post it in the fourm.

OK.  The srcds-on-solaris server is up and running, and we're giving it a shakedown this weekend.  Feel free to join at:

69.76.141.98:27015

There are 4 bots on the server, so you can join even if it says 0 are playing.  You can let me know if you have any problems here or at our clan server, http://aceofspades27.proboards52.com/index.cgi in the "Server Rules/Information" forum.

After the weekend shakedown, I'm going to move this from its current VMWare image to a permanent physical machine.  Then I'll post a complete tutorial on how I got it running.

Thanks,

One more update:

The beta-test period is over, with no crashes or evident flaws. I'm ready to declare it good and bake a cake.

I've posted a complete tutorial on everything over in the "Tutorial" forum.

Thanks,
