I'm looking to start up a Counter-Strike: Source server around 12-16 slots. I'm going to be running it on a 2.2GHz Pentium 4, 1024MB RAM, and if it matters at all it has a 256MB Radeon 9600 Pro. I really only have two questions about the server. First, how fast should my upload speed of my internet connection be? Would 1mbps do fine, or would that be to low? And secondly, would you all reccomend that I use Linux or Windows for this server?

For 12 slot server 1mbps upload should be sufficient with minimal lag. As far as operating system goes, if you're fluent in linux, I say go for it, though some people say the windows code for SRCDS is better than linux due to the people at valve not being the best of linux coders. My suggestion, if you can split your drive in half using say, partition magic. install windows on 1 partition and a linux distro on the other, run each side for about 2-3 days with people in it, see which one feels better to you.

A few GSPs use CentOS. What's it like?

As for Gentoo I'm not to sure I'm fluent enough with Linux to really use that. I've gotten my internet up and running at my new house and right now I have on average a 2.5mbps upload speed, which is obviously enough to host a 16 man server. Although, will a 16 man server cause very much noticeable lag on my network?
