i downloaded linux-2.6.8.1 from kernel.org, extracted it and cd into the directory. all went good. i then typed make menuconfig in terminal, worked fine. now i got the blue config screen and i have loaded my previous config file. however, i cannot find the kernal timer option! i have added a picture to the thread so you can see.

Hope you guys can help.

it's 2 levels in (so go in one menu and then one more), i forget exactly where because i've only done the menu once, i always do "make oldconfig". you also have to change your processor type from your pic looks like you haven't done anything yet. just cycle through the menus and you'll find it.
