Disallowed characters in rcon password?

Are any characters, such as @, #, $, or * not allowed in an rcon password? I'm having some serious troubles with HLStatsX filling up it's logs with failed rcon auth's even though the rcon on the admin page and in the server.cfg are identical.

Also, are rcon pw's case sensitive? Are there length restrictions? Mine is around 14 characters.
