I am curently running SRCDS on Windows Server 2003 with an AMD Duron 1400 with 256mb ram (pc133). Suprisingly it is running pretty well. (24.10.5.14) I am going to dump about $100 into it this month, and I would like to know where I can get the biggest performance boost from....upgraded CPU or more MEM? Eventually I will do both, but not right now. Motherboard is a socket A and I think it says it will support up to an athlon xp 2600. I would greatly appreciate any information on this. I can also support DDR2700 mem.
Thanks,
Jon

CPU should probably go first.

hmm.. i don't know much about amd, but off hand that sounds like a pretty weak cpu, i think most definatly i would up the cpu first. 256 ram isn't much, but usually is enough for one small server. just be sure the mobo can handle it, cuz like i said, i don't know jack about amd.. lol.

AMD would probably be a better brand for running servers, but a weak AMD still wouldnt be good. Get a new CPU, and If you can, get a nice 64-bit one.

Thanks for the replies, it seems like the CPU would be the recommended first jump. My mobo doesn't support 64 bit, and I really don't want to dump a lot of money into since I am going to build a computer this year and turn my current one into the server. I can get an AMD 2500xp cpu for around $100, so I think I will order it probably this weekend. Thanks again for the repliew and check it out 24.10.5.14 if you get a chance.....I am on my cable connection, so if you aren't on west coast, you may get some high pings (the high pingkicker is set at 200 too).
Later,

It all depends on how high the load on your server is. If high and you want to use more available slots on the server you first have to monitor the server load (CPU and MeM).
Can you discribe what the load is and with how many players online?
