Server Computer Upgrade
#1
Im not sure if this the right place to put this..

Right now I am running a successful Garry's Mod and Minecraft server on my Dads old alienware. They have both been up since about June.. and I am just now gaining a lot of popularity. I am in need of an upgrade. What do you guys recommend?

Alienware Specs(Current Server)
Intel E6850 2Core at 3.3Ghz
4GB RAM
500GB HDD

My thoughts on an upgrade
AMD 6128 Opteron 8Core at 2Ghz
8GB RAM for now.. motherboard has room for 32GB
Same 500GB HDD

I would be keeping the PSU, VideoCard, CDdrive and such from the Alien.. I would just buy the CPU,Motherboard, and RAM. What I listed above is $680, could you guys reccomend a CPU,Motherboard, and RAM that would come to a total of under $700? As of right now im not planning on adding different types of servers other than my SRCDS Gmod one and the minecraft server.

Thank you for any help Big Grin

Bump.

After looking at different server processors I think a Xeon would be better for me, because I only run two servers. Wouldnt the higher clock speed of a Xeon be better than the cores in an Opteron? Which does SRCDS like better? (The Xeon I like so far is the E3-1270)

Would anyone care to give me their two-cents?

The Xeon would be better because of it's clock speed. Having a lot of cores is just un-needed since srcds is singlethreaded and does not use more than one core.

I wish more gaming companies who sell Dedicated servers would realise this!
