Cause of lag spikes?

Downstream Speed: Up to 6.0 Mbps
Upstream Speed: Up to 768 Kbps

Windows 7
Amd 955 4.0 oc
2x4gb ram 1333
corsair 650w
geforce 470

I run a small dedicated server with max slots at 10. Sometimes I get these really bad lag spikes like every 20 min and it last a couple of minutes. The most people I ran my server was about 7 people, but got really laggy after about 5 min then they left. Is the cause of my lag because of my internet? Is it because my server is performing something with the folders like logging. I dont have very much addons so that wouldn't be the cause of it I think.

And i read this article about dedicated servers and it looks like I should be in good position to run a 10 slot server.

I fall into the category of a 18 slot person server. And I dont run hldsupdatetool. I use source multiplayer dedicated server from steam.

I'd say your upload speed is no where near what it needs to be, especially if your browsing the Internet / playing games / downloading things as well as hosting a server. I'd suggest upgrading your upload to at least like 5Mbps if you can.

Thanks for your reply, but how come it says on the article that 720 kbps is more than enough for a 10 slot. If the internet was really a problem then why can I play normally for a long period of time then all the sudden I hit lag spikes for a couple of minutes, then its back to normal. Could it be that my server is performing an operation every so minutes that's causing it to lag?

The server by default does not do anything on a certain timer, now plugins may. As for the article I've not read it but I can assume they are taking in account for the optimal conditions and maybe low rates. Like I said earlier if you do anything else on the connection at all it will drastically change your upload.
