FPS instability
#1
Hey all,

I'm running an Intel xeon x3450 2.67ghz x4 real,x4 logical cores, 8gb drr3 1333ram, and a 100mb port, and Windows server 08 r2 standard 64bit now here is my problem... I have the high res-timer, and my fps_max is -0 but my fps on server console is only ever at 980ish, and is consistently fluttering. dropping down to 900 maybe 890 at times then jumping back up. Is this normal? the cpu never goes more than 10% load with 25 people on there, but the fps will hover around 900 steady when there are that many people. Also I am running TCAdmin which makes servers run as a service but I doubt that causing the issue as I've used it on other machines no problem.

1000fps windows server are probably the most unstable fps there can be. When I ran multiple 1000fps servers back in the day, the absolute most fps drop I had was 50. It was done with many many tweaks to the systems os. But with the orangebox engine, and being human lol, you don't need anymore than 60fps. Actually, 60fpsish is better than 300-600fps.

infact, with the orangbox engine, fps exactly equal the tickrate (usually 66.67) is ideal. if you run slightly higher fps (like 68), the result will actually be worse. slightly lower (like 64) is better, but this will reduce the tickrate (nobody will notice if it's only 64). if you cannot have the fps stable enough, it is better to run with much higher fps like 200-300. stability is no longer important than anymore as long as it keep over ~200 fps. even higher fps are only useless (but do not really hurt).

Actually with windows server 2008 R2 Like he is using. I can get a 99.99% stable 1000FPS on a X3460. it was at around 2.9ish ghz, maybe even 3.0ghz ( turbo boost ). Now, you want to make sure you're running your timers at <1.0ms, use set timer resolution. Also, make sure the affinity of the servers are set to 2 cores, instead of having windows switch it around.

Also, go into game and do bind . "rcon stats" and login, using the srcds panel to view your fps isn't realistic, rcon stats is the best way to check it. Also that is differen't from typing stats directly into the server console for some reason Toungue

Hope this helps. And gosh, do I miss the forum Toungue

with some tool usually called something like pingbooster, or just by starting a mediaplayer (without playing anything, just keep it running)
