Ports shouldn't be nessacary to open for this. However the Steam servers could be really busy in the time of your updating of the server. Sometimes it does really hang there forever Smile Try agian and let it stay for a while.

Any help on this would be appreciated. I'm having this problem too. Running on Ubuntu 10.10 x86.

Command ./steam -command update -game Left4Dead -dir . -verify_all

Stuck on "Checking Bootloader Version" for a lot longer than 2 hours. Tried it twice and left it running overnight twice. No joy. I'm not even getting those "failed to connect" messages. Nothing.

I had the same problem with the Left4Dead2 server but it did eventually update whilst I slumbered.

top shows steam running and eating CPU cycles like crazy but nothing's happening. I'd really like to get the server updated so I can play ;>

That can't be my problem, my server is in the DMZ so all ports are open.

SlumBeotch! I feel like an idjut!

sudo ./steam -command update -game left4dead -dir . -verify_all

Since I chmod'd everything so that I was owner I didn't think sudo was necessary.

And there's realchamp in this very thread asking "Did you run it as root?"

Duh, no.
