Reading over threads I had anticipated this simple step of the process to take mere minutes at most... with the actual game content taking the majority of time, but 13 hours is just crazy.

The machine is set as the DMZ of a 10/7.5Mbps network and no ports are forwarded to any other machine. The folder I am installing to is owned by the 'palin' user and 'palin' group as are the executables themselves. I connect to the server via PuTTY. It's a fairly slow machine, but ran CS:S servers suitably for my needs back when it was still running Win2K.

I'm going nuts with how much time i'm spending just to update one little file. Is there something painfully obvious that I'm just overlooking here or is this likely just a lack of bandwidth at steam central giving me this heartburn?

Update:

After restarting "./steam" it came back with
Code:
[palin@entropyserv srcds]$ ./steam
Checking bootstrapper version ...
Failed to connect to any GeneralDirectoryServer
so at least now its doing something. It did take over 20 minutes for that to post though, so I'm still saddened by the long wait.
