Try running it as root using Sudo.
Code: sudo ./steam -command update -game "Counter-Strike Source" -dir .

Than you probably did something wrong in advance. There is no reason to run steam with sudo unless you ran it with sudo before (which will probably create some files in your home directory that belong root and therefore cannot be overwritten anymore without sudo). Of course, if you chown (or chmod) the files afterwards and run the server as a user, the result is still ok. But again, usually there should not be a reason for running steam as root. I never did.

Well, now that I remember I didn't use Sudo, I ran it while logged into root ("sudo -s" or "su") and I ran the actual server logged into my user account. I edited files via SFTP.
