For those Linux users (and esp. server admins) that did not yet hear of it: The 64 bit version of the Linux kernel has a big security hole, that allows root access to any user that can execute arbitrary code. Meaning, anyone that can log in with ssh, or even only upload and run some game server plugin can potentially exploit it.
A kernel upgrade is really mandatory for those machines where untrusted people have access to, and strongly recommended also for web servers etc. Double check that you really install a fixed kernel, unfortunately most kernel patches etc. do *not* include the fix even in the most recent version! Usually the most recent stock kernel of the Linux distribution has the fix.
