Rate suggestions please
#1
Hey everyone. I've operated TF2 servers for quite a while now. I've recently changed to a new dedicated box, which is more powerful than I've used to date. I've had a lot of people asking me to change rates, so I'm wondering if I can get some advice from people smarter than me about rates... which is probably everyone on hereSmile

The server is as follows:

core i7 860 quad core +HT+turbo boost
8GB RAM
100 mb/s
4000GB bandwidth /month

OS: Windows 2003 server 64 Enterprise

Here are my rates

sv_minrate "1500"
sv_maxrate "70000"
sv_minupdaterate "10"
sv_maxupdaterate "66"
sv_maxcmdrate "100"
sv_mincmdrate "0"

Thanks for any help.
also, max fps is set to 600

I almost never set the minimum rates, but a good maxrate would be more like 30000, and a good maxupdaterate is 67 or so (same for maxcmdrate).

I had the maxrate at 30000 and people said I needed to increase it. I'm not sure what the benefit is. Is it better to set the maxupdate rate to 67? I guess what I'm asking is, what is the main difference, or what would the pros and cons be. Thanks for the help and sorry I'm such a rate idiot.

increasing the sv_maxrate probably does not change anything at all. if you set it too low, people will have choke. if people do not have choke, it is high enough. increasing it any further does not increase the actual rate, as the game simply does not "want" to transmit more data. the actual amount of date is limited by the updaterate and cmdrate...

afaik TF2 also has a fixed tickrate of 66, so setting sv_maxcmdrate to anything higher than 66 does not make any sense (but does not hurt either). lower bounds of the rates might be useful to avoid exploits. I would recommend lower limits of 33. don't set the lower limits too high, you might create problems for people with a slow connection.
