Welcome to SRCDS for Mac
#16
You guys need to remember that steam is just a distribution platform. It doesn't automatically make all the games work with every Operating System. Its up to the game developers to convert, or initially build the games with multiple platforms in mind.

While having steam on Mac, might make Developers think twice when deciding which platform there game is going to be on, Windows is still the accepted standard with the most resources when it comes to gaming on a computer.

We all know that, but the fact is, that most of the people on this forum, are playing games which are developed by Valve. Valve have ported several games from Windows to the Mac platform after they developed Steam for mac, and more games will be coming (ex. CS:S)..

It's not that it's more accepted it's just that people don't know any better or don't care to.

Anyways, the moderator even said so, no more flame wars. If you want to do that go to another forum and say your peace. This is going to be a thread for mac users to get the information they need to run dedicated servers. I for one don't want to have to hunt down all sorts of posts with a million "Mac sux" threads that are always so "intelligently" (sarcasm) thought out. How many times have we heard "mac sux?" Too many and all because people can't keep their fingers from typing about things they shouldn't. It's been said a million times before. Let it go and give us our room to communicate. Do OS X users randomly go into the PC SRCDS threads and say "Windows sux."? No. So please don't do the same.

I, for one, am excited at this opportunity because my mac is the only computer I have and all I want to do is to be able to test my own maps that I've created. I'm not going to buy and brandish a server just so I can test and make maps.

Thanks,

spiral

This was the most mundane, unimportant drivel that I've heard in my entire life. You (obviously) have no sentence structure and have no use for life in general. Please leave and take your 3rd grade grammar with you.

Wow, first person who addresses the opposite of the Mac as Windows and not a PC...

Thanks. I was a Windows user since I was 11 up until 3 years ago. The whole mac sux thing gets on my nerves when an os x user posts an honest question and all they do is get flamed. They weren't looking to have to defend their choice when asking an honest question. In the end the thread gets taken over as a Mac vs. PC issue when it never was started to be that way at first. This thread SHOULD NOT become one of those.

Yes, we all have our opinions. This is just not the thread to do it in.

I just figured to try and stop the flaming because I enjoy playing games and would like to build maps using srcds to test them that is native to os x.
For now though, there is a link on this forum to get a/an srcds running in the new version crossfire. Until srcds and the hlupdatetool comes out for os x, this is probably the next best thing.

EDIT: I should note that the -game command I'm using is for Team Fortress 2. I'm not sure what the exact names are for other source games.

You can set up the server following the usual srcds steps for windows using the "run command" option in Crossover. Steps are as follows and only worked for me using crossfire 9:

1. Download the hldupdatetool.exe
2. double click the hldupdatetool.exe
3. I installed mine in a custom direcotry /Users/yourusernamehere/library/valve/hlserver although it's probably better to use a custom directory that is shorter so you can better see what you are doing when using the "run command" in Crossover. If you mess up it's just easier to track down where you messed up since you have to enter the directory twice.
4. Be sure to place the hlupdatetool.exe into where you installed the files. Makes it easier.
5. In Crossover, go to the Run Command option.
6. Type in the directory where hlupdatetool.exe is stored. After you type that also type this: -command update -game tf -dir
7. After the -dir command, retype that same directory sans the hlupdatetool.exe
8. At this point it should look like this:
/Users/yourusernamehere/library/Valve/Hlserver/hlUpdateTool.exe -command update -game -tf -dir /Users/yourusernamehere/library/Valve/HLserver/
9.It takes a while to update everything so don't think it isn't doing anything. You'll see a percentage of it being updated via Crossover window.
10. Click on the srcds.exe.
11. Choose the internet option and set up your server specifics.
12. In the Steam servers or "yoursourcegame" servers, go to the favorites tab.
13. Click on the "Add Server" button toward the bottom of that window.
14. Type in the IP address that is given in the srcds.exe window.
15. Double click and enjoy. Congrats. You now have a dedicated server Toungue.
