Dedicated Server Questions
#1
I own my own gaming company and i'm pretty good at making servers. Ive been doin it for quite a while now for like gameserver hosting company but im thinking of stepping it up some. I know how to setup a server like on my own PC and i may have to do that until get my own dedi and that's what i wanna talk about or ask you guys questions about.

I am thinking about shutting down my individual servers i have with hosting companies and getting a dedicated server. My questions are the following:

1. If i buy a dedicated PC and put it in my house and attach it to my internet, can i run servers off of it or do i need an upgraded internet.

2. how good of a PC would i need to run a few servers. I wouldn't say like 10 but around 5-4 pending.

3. Is it a good idea? would it be laggy?

You are better off hosting a server in a data center. If you plan on selling servers, you MUST host in a data center.

Allow me to actually explain why this is a bad idea.

A: Most (not all, but 99%) consumer-level internet service providers explicitly disallow users from running servers of any variety from people using the service.
B: Most consumer-level internet service providers do not provide anywheres near the amount of burstable bandwidth or connection speeds neccesary for running a dedicated server.
C: Houses are not climate-controlled, secure environments and they generally don't include long battery backups or industrial-strength surge protection.
D: Even ignoring the above, it appears incredibly unprofessional to be selling servers out of your house.

I know a company which does sell their servers out of their house, pretending that they have a "hosting center" Smile

@All

1. I wasn't saying i'd sell hosting, i was offering it. I know if i sell hosting i need a data center, incredible bandwidth, and climate control.

2. You gotta think smaller, im asking a few simple questions about my Gaming company only. 5-6 servers cannot be that much and if they are ill open up only 2-3.

3. Climate control is one thing i think is a bad idea but one center can't overheat in a cold place but i'll think of something.

point being, i didn't say i wanted to host servers for other people, just host servers for my own company.
If i do host servers for other people, it'd be free and out of kindness but no, i don't wanna start my own hosting company anytime soon.

Even if you're not commercially selling servers, running servers on consumer-level internet is explicitly prohibited by the Terms of Service of most consumer-level ISPs. You would want to have a good hard read of your ISP's TOS before you consider running servers at home.

[edit]: I worded the last bit pretty badly. Fixed now.

Just read over the entire agreement with bandwidth consumption and i have to say i'm pretty boned. At this point i have no idea what i'm gonna do since it seems pretty hopeless so i may just try to keep up with individual gameserver hosting if i can find another job. Thanks for the answers people.

If you would like, I could probably set you up something uncomplicated. It wouldn't have root access or anything though Toungue

Be careful since you have Comcast! You are limited to only 250GB of bandwidth a month. An active server can use up quite a bit of bandwidth.
