SRCDS Performance w/ Overclocking
#1
Title says all, I am using a Q9550 from 2.83 to 3.74 Ghz (I am shooting for 4 GHz, but 3.74 is fine for now).

I am mainly looking to see if overclocking will increase registry or allow a solid tickrate on higher slots.

Thanks

Please define 'increase registry'. Tickrates slop is caused by the OS scheduler not being able to process a large amount of data in between frames. Tossing more CPU at it will not solve the problem, you need to identify the issue and fix it that way.

Well maybe I should say overall game server performance. I am just looking at new concepts atm.

If it's STABLE, it will allow you to run more servers. Registry is all about tick rate and lag. Or it's just 12 yearolds complaining.

So just more servers, nothing about overall ingame performance?

Pretty much. But beware over-clocking your server because it can render it unstable and if you are colocating the server, it could become difficult having to restart it. Unless you are hosting it at home, don't bother over-clocking it.

I would maybe try overclocking then but remember it can render your server unstable

very slightly maybe. the servers always have some fps drops (even if the fps meter doesn't show them, unfortunately the stats command is biased for high fps...) caused by the engine needing too much time for the calculations. if the cpu is faster it can do the calculations in a shorter time so you will have less fps drops. but the effect should be very minimal, probably not noticeable at all.

Colo the server. It's probably Lag. Even if you have a fast pipe, you have lower priority on a home line.
(Ok, that's not exactly how it works, but lets go with that)

I am not complaining about lag, the server runs fine (FIOS ftw).

I just want to increase server performance more before I decide to co-locate.

Do yourself a favor and please do not overclock if you are colocating. It's not going to be worth the troubles.

Well CPU usage has gone down significantly, my full TF2 server barely uses more than 10% of a core.

32 Slots
66 Tick
