Is there anyway to connect to my lan server over wan so players can join me from my friends list? I have the hosts file setup and it works for my website but can't get it to work with a game server.

Because you are connected via the local IP and others have to connect via external. Unless you can connect via your external IP, other will not be able to join via you. However others can join via others.
