Dedicated Server saftey?
#1
Hi, I've been running a dedicated TF2 20 slot server locally, and I know, not the best idea. But i've been running it with mostly bots in it for fun and to let people see what they're like.

But recently some people on my network found out that I was running this server and said that not only am I slowing down the network considerably, but I am ruining the saftey of the network.

While I know that as more people connect the network may take a small hit from the bandwidth needed, I really never thought of running SRCDS as unsafe.

If anyone could clear some of this up, I would be greatly appreciative.

Honestest I can't seen how it should be dangerous? But if they think it is, they should be able to say why?

Well, they say because of the ports that SRCDS needs to be open, someone could sneak into our network through those ports. TBH, i'm not really sure if that's true or not. Can someone clarify on this and the orig questions?

Well it very much depends on your network setup.

If you forward the port (27015) to a specific ip, it will only reach that computer, on that port.

That will not make your network more vulnerable.

This really depends on the network. While SRCDS is generally considered safe, there is always some risk of opening up ports. You also open up other risks such as pissed off kids launching DDoS attacks on your network Toungue

If you are concerned about being DDOS'ed, get a router that blocks Denial of Service attacks. Most Dlink routers have that feature, and I have it enabled at home, even though my ISP blocks all requests to their clients.

You can't block a DDoS.
