[resovled....]Ping/latency issues
#1
I just purchased a dedicated server an i am having some issues with ping/latency. The server is located in Florida while i am located in NY.

Server Specs:
Athlon 64 X2 4200
2 GB DDR2 RAM
Bandwidth: 3000 GB
Port: 100mbps
OS: Debian 5 x64

Trace route to server from my system:
Code:
1     4 ms     5 ms    10 ms  silent-PC [0.0.0.0]
  2     5 ms     5 ms     5 ms  167.206.32.66
  3     *        *        *     Request timed out.
  4     5 ms     7 ms     6 ms  rtr4-tg11-2.wan.hcvlny.cv.net [64.15.4.25]
  5     *        *        *     Request timed out.

Trace complete.

Ping the server from my system:
Code:
Pinging 190.120.238.139 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 190.120.238.139: bytes=32 time=92ms TTL=51
Reply from 190.120.238.139: bytes=32 time=92ms TTL=51
Reply from 190.120.238.139: bytes=32 time=92ms TTL=51
Reply from 190.120.238.139: bytes=32 time=92ms TTL=51

Ping statistics for 190.120.238.139:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 92ms, Maximum = 92ms, Average = 92ms

From the looks of the trace route the issue seems to be on there network, but I have little experience in networking and was wondering if this was the cause or if it was something wrong with the server settings.

How much the ping should be?

The traceroute and the ping look very normal. Lines like " * * * Request timed out." are very common in traceroute.

This is the first time i have had a ping so high on a east coast server and for that distance. I have tested with other players our ping on farther servers and other hosting company's in Florida and we get half the lat/ping that we do with this server. Every server i have checked from Florida to Texas has been around 60 instead of the 100 our server is hovering.

Example:

Pinging a different game server in Florida
Code:
Pinging 4.79.145.53 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 4.79.145.53: bytes=32 time=45ms TTL=113
Reply from 4.79.145.53: bytes=32 time=44ms TTL=113
Reply from 4.79.145.53: bytes=32 time=46ms TTL=113
Reply from 4.79.145.53: bytes=32 time=43ms TTL=113

Ping statistics for 4.79.145.53:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 43ms, Maximum = 46ms, Average = 44ms

Yea, the provider you have doesn't have the greatest network, looks like they use cheapo bandwidth, and it appears the ping spikes when it hits the data center... Meh, ServerProto is horrible, look at their prices... All their servers are junk amd junk....

Here is my tracert, and my ping is 102 to Florida which is horrible considering I can normally hit 60.

The only 'cheap' they have is cogent..

I see routes from AS3356 and AS3549, but nothing else; unless they have private peering that I'm not seeing.

I see them announcing mostly 3549 (gblx) and 3356 (level3), unless they were getting attacked earlier I don't see anything unusual.

Meh, he may be running that little $5 dedicated server deal thing they were doing... they probably dont care about networks to them.

I am doing a $77 package. I couldn't find many dedicated's that were under $100 that offered anything that would run more then one server which was why i went with this company. I am just aggravated at there network because i am getting half that ping on other servers in Florida.

stop man .... some routers in the network dont ask or ask very slow for pakets. thats why some packets gets lost or with a very high ping on some places ...try a winmtr > find it on google. you will see then if there is a problem or not....

The output is good. You can see that 130 packets sent and 130 packets received on the target host. The latency variance was very small. Your best ping was 93 and your worst was 112. Average is 102, so it's in between. There is nothing wrong in the network except that it's not as low-latency as other servers in Florida.

Well i was correct, that the ping was excessive for what i paid for. Server pronto decided to do a bait and switch, instead of hosting my server in Florida like i asked they instead placed it in Panama. When i ran the trace route i figured they named the line after the company since its owned by Infolink panama corp. but i was clearly wrong. Just a word of advice don't purchase from them.

Roger that.
And... LOLPANAMA?! WTF...>?!>!

Who the hell would want a panama datacenter / dedicated server? Boats? Monkeys? Tribes of Panamanians?

Ya they decided to bait and switch me. They gave me a ip to ping and test, told me they are located in Florida and that is the ping i should expect. Then they stuck my server in Panama. Since there is no options to select a data center location i am guessing they do this often to people. As for who wants a Panama dedicated apparently a crap load of spammers since there ips are banned all over the place and are on a ton of ban lists....
