[Resolved] Internet Server Issues
#1
Hi everyone!

I am quite new to the whole Counterstrike: Source server creation, but I have managed to get everything working. I have even loaded mani admin and GG5 into my server. Smile

My ports are forwarded correctly and I have no problem with that process (I downloaded the port checker from portforward.com and it tested perfect). My problem is that my friends who are not on the same network cannot connect to my server, even though it shows up on the internet servers.

My friends have tried the connect command in console and they always get "Server is not responding".

Why is this? I have sv_lan set to 0, but I heard that does nothing.
Do I need to keep the server up for a certain amount of time?

Any help is appreciated.

If screenies are needed I will be happy to provide them.

Thank you very much,

~The Bomb

Perhaps firewall is blocking it?

I am trying this out now. Keep you posted...
I unblocked the ports within my firewall. Thank you for this, but it still doesn't resolve the problem.

My friends still gets the failed connection. "Connection failed after 4 retries."

I do notice when I first start my server my FPS is around 64. After 20 min or so it sits around 240. Does this have anything to do with it?

Is your friend connecting over the internet with your local ip address or external ip?

We are trying with the local. But that may be the problem.

Would it be my external with the port attatched?

And what about the master servers presented in the console? Are those of any use to me?

Make sure you have your ports forwarded to the correct address, make sure you have both TCP and UDP forwarded, and make sure your dedicated server has a Statically assigned IP.

I forwarded my ports, both TCP and UDP to my router address. And also for the firewall. And for my server it sets its own IP, which happens to be my router's address.

Is that correct? Or do I need to do everything with my external IP?

Explain further what you mean by "And for my server it sets its own IP, which happens to be my router's address."

Are you talking about the default gateway?

I do not have the +ip command in the startup of my server. It automatically sets itself to my router's ipv4 address, not the default gateway.

Here. I think this will make things easier. Instead of telling you what I have already setup I am going to tell you what I want.

I want to run a server on the internet that my friends and I can play on from different locations. I am behind a router (and I believe this is causing most of my confusion). All I need to know is what ip to use and what ip I need to tell me friends to join (which I don't think it should be different).

With that put, I will try using my external ip for everything. And forward all the ports through that.

I think this is any easy fix, so please help!

Thanks

Update: When I change the server IP to my external IP address, I get and engine error stating: Couldn't allocate dedicated server UDP port. I guess I will keep trying.

OK, I think i know what you are doing wrong, do not set the ip using the command line... let the server do it. Make sure the ports are forwarded to your local ip of the computer running the server. Go to http://www.whatismyip.com and give your friends that ip with the port number for the server so if whatismyip.com gives you 70.44.55.66 send your friend 70.44.55.66:27015 and you should be ready to go. From thoroughly reading your post, it sounds like you gave your friends your local ip, which will not work, you also cannot allocate your external ip to your internal computer because it is already used on your network, hence the error. The reason you forward your ports is so the external port on your router gets redirected to the internal port on your server.

Good luck, let me know how it works out.
