Server Reload
#1
I am kind of wanting to broaden my horizon with linux. My server is Centos5.2 x64, but I am not satisfied with the performance. I had a coupon for free cpanel, but that is pretty huge just for running a simple stats website and database.

I am wondering how much of an impact cpanel/sql has on the gameservers, and if it would be worth it to reload without cpanel, and manually setup a stats site, or forgo stats completely.

I want to eventually tinker with all the popular ones, (debian, ubuntu, gentoo)

Its a Q9400 4gig ram

if you set up your gameservers correctly (e.g. realtime scheduling like described in my howto) there should be virtually no impact. well, the only problem I observe are some lags during heavy disk io. for some reason my server gets quite a high cpu load on disk io, and only that kind of load seems to disrupt the realtime performace. webservers etc. usually don't produce so much disk io, unless you are hosting some high-traffic site or e.g. big files.

For some reason, your kernel doesnt work well for centos with an intel core 2 processor behaartes... I would recommend using kernel 2.6.28.1 and having processor type set to generic.

I have a intel core 2 and it's working there Toungue
but 2.6.26.X seems not to work on some newer chipsets, e.g. ICH10...
I recommend setting the processor type to what you have not to generic...

Well in the 2.6.28 kernels, if you set it to Intel Core2/Newer, it will not start...

It started fine for me when I was on CentOS.

I did everything in the wiki and chopped even more stuff out.
