TF2 Huge Lag spikes
#1
I have not been able to pin down what causes this problem. The server seems to randomly lose connection for about 3 seconds or so and then play with zero lag after that. If i have TF2 set to high priority on the server like i do my CSS servers the CSS servers will also get the spike. CPU usage isnt a problem. I have watched it closely to be sure.

Server OS: 2003 x64
Processor: AMD Phenom 9500 Quad core 2.2 GHz
Ram: 4GB
Game(s): TF2
Start Up Command: -console -game tf +ip 75.102.27.5 -port 27015 +maxplayers 32 +exec server.cfg +map arena_well
Admin Mods: None. Removed for troubleshooting.

Anyone else had this problem?

It might be the Steam Servers. They have been pretty busy the past couple of days. Wait it out and see if it gets any better Smile

Dont think thats what it is. Yes i know the Steam servers are a bit busy. Updating with hldsupdatetool sometimes takes forever. Actually this is a problem that has persisted for 6+months. I just have been too lazy to fix the problem. We are about to launch a sales site. Kinda means i need to get on the ball and get the problem fixed lol.

I highly doubt that a new server would get DDOS'ed, and for this long if he says its been going on for awhile. It might be any issue, like a conflicting piece of software or something, but not DDOS.

Distributed denial of service? We havnt pissed off someone with that kind of resources. Even so it would have shown up in the firewall logs and the security hole would be fixed. That and it would have no relation to TF2 at all...

You do know what a DDoS is right?

how many servers are you running?

TBH i have not seen any advantages to high priority. At least not in windows except the fact the servers run like SH**

I was running only 1 server. I found the problem. TCAdmin was not configured properly and I set TF2 as Source instead of Halflife2, so it couldn't query the server and thought it had crashed, so it was restarting it automatically. YAY.

6 CSS servers. All 500FPS 66Tick. Only 2 get heavy traffic. 1 TF2 at the moment. Trying to get the lag issue fixed before i add more. I am not comming anywhere close to my hardware limits. havnt even gotten past 30% usage yet.

For CSS i have found that setting at 'very high' reduces spawn lag for large servers and can sometimes help out with registry if that becomes a problem.

ruinernix that is not the case here. I have it setup properly.

I went as far as deleting everything in the directory and reinstalling via hldsupdatetool. still having the same issue. 100% random. Lags my CSS servers too. Everything on the box takes a hit.

The server updates are known to lag a server, no matter the hardware specs. Your situation seems funny since it seems to be hardware not internet connection.

but with the hardware in this system i dont see how. i have plenty of resources to run this without any problem (theoretically) >.<

My honest Opinion and i have been managing servers for a while. Ever since tf2 came out it has never been a stable game for windows or for linux. It typically runs better on linux but then again what doesnt? When ever valve releases a new tf2 update usually the game crashes for about a week then everything runs good then they release another update which again crashes the game for about a week and the cycle continues. Personally i think TF2 should be taken off the market and the developers should just finish the game then release it when they know they have fixed all the issues instead of fixing them as they continue to develop the game. I for one have stopped running TF2 server for this sole reason. The customer is usually never happy when the server is crashing 24/7 and pretty much their is nothing that you can do and its a valve problem. After explaining to the customer that it is out of your control you end up getting another earful and it just causes one large headache. I love tf2 its a fun game i love to play it but managing the server for tf2 i will never do it again. Also if you notice on the front page of the windows and linux section 90% of topics are "Help my tf2 server is crashing"

Again this is just my personal opinion about the game.

It is easily a major loss in revenue... but at this point i am considering not offering TF2. Easy (but potentially expensive) resolution to the problem >.>
