[RESOLVED] Garrysmod Dedicated Server
#1
Earlier today I installed SRCDS by following this tutorial. (Except for the extra content part.)

I run the server, check my Steam servers tab and under LAN I see my server.
When I try to connect however it gives me the "after 4 tries" error.

I doubt this is a port forwarding problem because I can't even connect locally and second of all I checked using YouGetSignal.

I have even tried with Windows Firewall turned off. I'm not essentially bad with computers so I thought settings this up would not be such a difficult process, infact I'm quite the techie but at this point in time I'm completely stumped because I've tried almost everything..

Also for reference here's my server shortcut target:

Quote:H:\srcds\orangebox\srcds.exe -console -game garrysmod +map gm_construct -maxplayers 4 -autoupdate +ip 192.168.2.201 -port 27015

I can completely avoid using SRCDS by running a listen server because this won't be up 24/7 however I don't want to force friends connecting to the listen server to download all the addons and custom files that I've got in my game so this was the easiest way to keep a clean setup for whenever I want to play with a couple of friends privately.

EDIT: For what it's worth I'd like to add that this dedicated server is run on the same computer I play on.

Could I please get a reply? Sorry for the bump, but I'm really stuck..

Read this thread: http://forums.srcds.com/viewtopic/9982
You also need to forward the ports from your router.

Please do not PM me for server related help

Did you honestly read my thread? It says that I've already forwarded the ports and have checked that I forwarded them using YouGetSignal.. Sorry if that sounded a little bit rude, I had no intention to. I'm just a little frustrated at the moment since I've been trying to get this working for quite a while.

Also, I had already read that thread before you posted, once again I explained why I would rather host a dedicated than a listen server in the original post..

I do thank you for the reply, but to be honest it gives the impression that you did not even take a look or read my post and at the first glance of the title shot out a link. Either that, or maybe I did not word it correctly, and then I'm sorry.

I really do hope you guys could help me, as I'm sure this is probably the best place to get some help.

Thanks for reading.

I'm actually a bit taken back that you said something like this to one of our best helpers here on these forums.

We all know that running a server on the same computer you play on is nothing but trouble, and in most cases won't even work. Instead of telling Mooga that he is not helping you, think he is giving you some very good advice.

If you read the post he linked, it is a word of telling you about your setup. We advice you take one of the solutions from the linked thread and apply it, since your problems are probably coming from the fact you are running the server on the same computer you play on.

But I was aware of the problems with running the server and playing, but the thread concerns mostly performance issues not networking ones.

Thank you then, I guess I will have to remove the addons I have installed when hosting a listen server and copy back the addons (which amount to over 1GB) when I want to play online again. ;\

When you ran the test, did it come back that the ports are open?
Can you connect via the connect command using your internal or external IP address?

Since the server is running on your own computer, you can try to connect via the loopback address as well (127.0.0.1). However it seems like it's an issues with the game using the same ports as the server. That thread would be much better at explaining that then I can because I've never done that.

It is also worth noting that it is not recommended to host and play on the same computer. There is also no promise that it will work.

If you host just the server without having the game open, can others join the server?

try it without the -ip and +port options and run it, you only need them if you assigned more than 1 ip for a NAT or you run more than one server off the server.

Thank you for the detailed reply, I'm sorry if my replies to you sounded rude. Yes, the test showed that my ports were opened properly.

After removing those I can now join locally! Now I just have to see if others can join, and they should be able to seeing as I have forwarded ports properly. Wink

I will be back to add a [RESOLVED] if I manage to get people to connect externally.

All has been resolved. Thank you for your help, the problem was quite simple but I needed pengy to point it out all the same! Big Grin

When you start up another server, you don't need the +ip option unless you have more than one ip. So it can be running with +port but it may not show on the lan browser
