Optimize Windows Server 2008
#1
I have disabled alot of services and this is what I have left:
Code:
Application Host Helper Service
Base Filtering Engine
Certificate Propagation
COM+ Event System
Cryptographic Services
DCOM Server Process Launcher
Desktop Window Manager Session Manager
DHCP Client
Distributed Link Tracking Client
DNS Client
Fast Multimedia Timer
Group Policy Client
Interactive Services Detection
Multimedia Class Scheduler
Network Connections
Network List Service
Network Location Awareness
Network Store Interface Service
Remote Access Connection Manager
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol Service
Security Accounts Manager
Shell Hardware Detection
Software Licensing
SSDP Discovery
Task Scheduler
Telephony
Terminal Services
User Profile Service
Windows Event Log
Windows Management Instrumentation
Windows Process Activation Service
Windows Update
World Wide Web Publishing Service

Any of these not needed to run Windows, IIS and SRCDS? I am trying to get my system down in resource usage.

Well Most of that stuf you need,
You can thank good old microsoft for making alot of shit in there platforms.
You need
Terminal Services
User Profile Service
Windows Event Log
Windows Management Instrumentation
Windows Process Activation Service
Windows Update
World Wide Web Publishing Service
And do yuo have any scheduled tasks? if not. you dont need the task scheduler
COM+ Event System
Cryptographic Services
DCOM Server Process Launcher
Desktop Window Manager Session Manager
DHCP Client
Distributed Link Tracking Client
DNS Client
Fast Multimedia Timer
Group Policy Client
Interactive Services Detection
Multimedia Class Scheduler
Network Connections
Network List Service
Network Location Awareness
Network Store Interface Service
Remote Access Connection Manager
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol Service
Security Accounts Manager
Shell Hardware Detection
Software Licensing
SSDP Discovery
Now keep this in mind, I would try to disable one at a tiime, making sure it doesnt affect any proformance, and or crash your system.
The only thing i could tell you, is reformat and dont install but the drivers, and the core items you use.
Also open the taskmanager, and see what the processes are....
IF you see something you dont like.. Kill it and check it in msconfig.

Core is a feature in Windows 2008 where you install only the needed (1.5gb and 200 - 300mb ram).
But I am trying Ubuntu Server instead Big Grin

If you're using Ubuntu make sure you in some way optimize your kernel, as Ubuntu comes with even more bloat than Windows in some senses...
