It was mentioned that runnin a listen server may run bette then srcds.
umm so lets say. If i have a seperate PC. would it be a good idea to run a listen server on that instead of srcds? or did you mean it will run better then srcds on the same comp?

It would be better to run a listen server on the same computer, SRCDS on a different one.

So wait- you run a GSP on the same computer you play on? I think that is the most stupid idiotic thing that could ever be done in the book of wrongs in SRCDS...

Personally, I run a public server while playing simultaneously I and have not had any problems. As long as I start the server before I start TF2 (so that srcds can aquire the appropriate ports) I do not have a problem. I can run a 32 man TF2 server without any issues on my home internet connection. There are few complaints about lag if any, and if there is lag, it's generally due to connection issues on the opposite end.
Now before I get flamed, let me note that this is a server mainly used by close group of my friends and I. It's rarely on during the week, sometimes it's on during the weekends, but most of the time it's off (unless it's an achievement weekend). For us, it's a matter of convenience; we can choose what we want to play and deal with griefers in a timely manner. We are not a serious clan and we don't have the funds to rent a server. It rarely crashes, and when it does, it's usually cause I do something stupid like x out of the HLSW.
In conclusion, running a server while simultaneously playing is a cheap alternative to a rented server as long as you know what you're doing. If you don't, being a server and playing on it can be problematic.

Is this info up to date?
I have no problems running my server and connecting via LAN menu through steam on my own server.

It is.
However! If it only are on LAN, then no problem

This is true, I guess I didn't elaborate enough. The reason its hard doing it online is because of port issues. If you are remaining on your LAN, ports are not an issue. Thanks for helping clear that up realchamp

I have one computer running my server in my house, and I play on another. I have had no port issues or connectivity problems at all so far.
Also I have had 16 players on the server, and only one (from Germany) experienced lag. I'm not sure why there is no lag... it's all being done on a shitty roadrunner home connection...

All depends on who is all on the internet at the time, your internet speed, the tickrate, fps, the server, the other players internet, rates, etc. A lot of factors are involved. . .

And this is where most people gets confused and then it just won't work.
As Dualcore said, there is alot of factor involved, which they all have to be right before getting it to work!

I know that I am a bit late with this but I have been struggling with my server for 2 solid weeks. I can understand why hosting/playing on the same machine would be a bad idea but I only want one other person to be able to connect to it. And with a dual core cpu, 6 gb of ram and anywhere between 25mbps and 30mbps on the i'net, i dont think that should be a problem.
My issue is that I cannot connect to my own server from the LAN side. It just times out. I dropped the firewall and there is no router....

If your friends can connect from your external IP, it's all good. Just remember you need to connect from your local IP, or the "LAN" tab in the Steam Servers browser.
