RE: Running a Lagg-Free Server

I deleted your post in windows dedicated server, did not need to be posted twice. if worthy after reading, i'll stick it.

Note: as to what yu said, its actually better to use DSl, yes, cable can be faster, this is true, however, Cable is on a shared line and you're not always gonna get the speeds you should it. It depends on how many people in your area have cable, and is activly using it. DSL on the other hand isn't a shared line.

RE: Running a Lagg-Free Server

sorry about that, I did'nt know where to post so I posted in both Smile

I'm only recommending cable because of the upload/download speeds. Yes you can run a server on DSL. DSL can be faster in some ways like you said, but I dont like it. I tried running a sever at my dads house with DSL and it lagged like crazy.

EDIT: Just updated the site- addded a news section and fixed the download links.

Might wanna redo how its listed out, maybe make an index or table of contents. the way you have it, you have them edit the registry, then do something else, then edit the registry again, should probably put all the regedits together Toungue

RE: Running a Lagg-Free Server

I also would like to state that this guide isn't just for servers, i would also recommend this guide for normal use, even if you have uber amounts of resources.

RE: Running a Lagg-Free Server

-bash-3.00$ ping http://www.laggfree.com
PING laggfree.com (64.202.167.192): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 64.202.167.192: icmp_seq=0 ttl=115 time=41.694 ms
64 bytes from 64.202.167.192: icmp_seq=1 ttl=115 time=41.999 ms
64 bytes from 64.202.167.192: icmp_seq=2 ttl=115 time=42.273 ms

looks like the domain is provisioned. Though it doesn't show up in whois.

RE: Running a Lag Free HL2 Server

Excellent guide. You put a lot of work into it. While you have expert knowledge of the Windows tweaking, I have afew comments.

A Pentium 4 isn't much faster than a Celeron

lol huh? You might wanna re-check your sources on that one. According to benchmarks at http://www.tomshardware.com, the P4 is about twice as fast as a Celeron of the same clock speed. And, they stopped making Celerons after 2.6 ghz.

sv_maxrate should be set to 9999

That depends on upload speed. You can have more players in your server by lowering the maxrate. I have a 780 kbps upload, so if I want 16 players, I multiply my 780 by 128, then divide by 16 (players) to get a maxrate of 6240. But, if I want 18 players, it's 780x128/18 = 5500.

One more thing: As a security measure, make your server.cfg's "Read Only." There is apparently a hack that allows clients to modify the server's config files.
