I thought I'd try out a Half-Life server, but I don't know which to install:

Would I use "valve" for the Half-Life server?  I don't have a copy of, or at least can't find a copy of Counter-Strike, so i don't want to install it.

Edit: OK, i got it, it was valve i was wanting.

New problem:

When I try joining I get this:
This server is using a newer protocol ( 47 ) than the client ( 46 ).  You should check for updates to your client.  

my HL version is ver46/1.1.1.0 where can I find ver47?

You should download the newer version when you restart steam.

?? The original HL isn't related to my steam. It's in its own folder "C:\
Sierra\..." How would steam update it?

hmm maybe try googling it cause there has to be something about it.
Isn't there an update function in the game?

Yeah -autoupdate works fine for me if thats what he means?

the server is updated, its the game that needs it, plus im using valve not cstrike.

I guess you'll have to search the net for the update if it doesnt work like that, it's kinda weird tho :S

I think what you need to do is instead of installing half-life use your half-life cd key, register it in steam and install it from steam.
