I am curious what mothods of cheat/hack detection are being used (successfully). I currently run Autoban, Zblockmax, and VAC2. I am pleased with Autoban, but there are occassionally false positives. Are there other alternatives out there that you guys are running? Also, is VAC2 really that effective? I have thought of just disabling it. Anyway, I look forward to anyone's thoughts.

Also autoban makes players lag through the map (especially on long distances), bans noob players for having aimbot and uses much CPU more then normal.

Hmmmm, I haven't seen or heard any complaints about long distance lag, but I will keep an eye out for it. I have heard that CPU usage can be increased, but mine stays under 20% with 10 slots full. I will check out steambans though....Thanks

Personally i dont like SteamBans, since it is player controlled..

VAC2 works in a sneaky way lol. They don't ban people on sight or something like that. When people use a cheat on a VAC2 secured server their account will get banned in the next few weeks, the cheater thought he bypassed VAC.

Al VAC bans are afterward, analysed by Valve people i believe.
As for VAC banned people, they will get kicked on join.
Player hjjsfjljs kicked from the game (VAC banned) or something like that

How do you think Steambans work ?

I'm pretty sure they have the same system for checking with demo's etc by a guy, altho when i registered at Steambans first thing that happend i got all this crap and bullshit about adding a cheater to their database which got that site on the never go there again list... too much trouble for 1 guy..

personally i dont think any hack detection program works, or at least in my experience it hasnt.. to bad there isnt something out there to check for a certain thing.. cuz i know some hacks and were to get them, but i dont know how to prevent them to happen on my server..

VAC2 will catch most of the cheaters, bad thing about is that they are not instantly banned from the game when somthing is detected.

Also hacks will always be there in games, best thing you can do is download and study them in a NON VAC SECURED private server (with bots), this way you can see how they work and then are easily recognisable ingame. This allows you to kick-ban them as soon as you see a cheater + they will be VAC banned later

VAC2 also bans on online non-VAC servers. So best is to test on offline servers (dedicated steam).

The reason for this is to catch people who think the hack hasn't been detected yet. By the time they realise the hack has been detected it should be too late.

True but the bad thing is that you have to play with cheaters on your server that "will be banned later".

Ok, Time for First post, don't know why its in the admins pit, but i am starting my own Cs:s DoD:s server.

Anyways, alittle bout my self(very brief) I am a former hacker, worked on alot of jobs, none i am really to proud of. Any ways what i want to say in here is, i have hacked Cs:s only wall hack. i dont anymore, i find it more fun to not know where ur enemy is, but i have used a very good wall hack.

What i am trying to get at is i played on my Legit Cs:S account for about 2 years almost, with this hack. Now not once did any one catch this on my comp, nor did "VAC2" so as for vac 2 being good, it works for hard hacks, like aimbot - speed hack, but wall hacks are REALLY hard to detect, the best way is having an admin spec the person to see if he/she prefires around walls.

I would like to develop a scaning prog. built into my server that looks for the files replaced by this hack, but will be hard because its local not server side.

VAC2 bans in no way are dealt by people. Valve already mentioned this awhile back before VAC2 was offically release. As far as im concerned VAC2 is no where near final completion, it still has its bugs and still misses a few hacks like antifreeze said.

steambans is not an anticheat.. all steambans is someone in a team of a protected server submits a demo of a cheater. then there are 3 guys who keep a close eye on demo to see if the user is really cheating, if they all agree he was cheating, that cheaters steamid is then added to the steambans database. all that pretty much does is, if you can get a team(your team MUST meet certain requirments) then you can protect your server, and the plug checks each steamid to see if its on the steambans database. So in a way it protects your server from those already caught by others.

In my opinion the best anticheat is a good admin with good eyes.

Some people swear by cheating death which tries to disable cheats so player can't use them.

Hackcam(never got released mainly because stgeam would probably consider it to be a hack as well) was suppose to be really good for admins, notsure what happened to it.

you don't need a team for steambans, all you really need is a forum (like this one) that refers to your server. once they verify that (generally 1-2 days) they will let you download the steambans plugin.

if you suspect a hacker, make a 5min demo and submit it on steambans, they will review and either say yes or no to adding the person to the steambans db.
